Excursions

On Wednesday afternoon, why not join us on our excursions to Hilbre Island, The Blue Planet Aquarium, Speke Hall, or alternatively, indulge in a spot of 5-a-side Football. See below for details.

Booking and payment for an excursion should be made on the registration form. Last minute bookings MAY be possible on arrival if places are still available.

You are, of course, free to explore the shopping and attractions of the City of Liverpool and the surrounding region. Visit the Tourist Information Centre in Queen Square for ideas of what to see and do, and how to get there.

Hilbre Island
Hilbre Island is a small sandstone island approximately one mile offshore from West Kirby on the north west coast of Wirral. The island can only be reached at low tide via a two-mile walk across West Kirby sands, and it is completely cut off at high tide. The island now hosts the X-band radar system and web cam run under the umbrella of the POL Coastal Observatory.

Hilbre is also something of a wildlife haven, with a colony of Atlantic grey seals usually visible, both playing in the waters around the island and also hauled out on the sandbanks across the channel from the island. Due to its isolated position and unique habitat there are several colonies of rare plants, including rock lavender and sea spleenwort.

Those wishing to go on this trip are strongly advised to bring a pair of waterproof walking boots or wellies as well as warm and waterproof clothing, as the trip across the sands can be quite wet underfoot and some of the rocky paths are slippery. There is little or no shelter on the island and no drinking water or public toilets!

Cost £7 per person.

Speke Hall
Speke Hall is one of the most famous half-timbered houses in Britain, now owned by the National Trust. It dates from 1490 and the interior has features from many different periods. It is also surrounded by extensive gardens and woodlands with views of the Mersey basin.

Cost £11 per person.

To find out more go to the Speke Hall, National Trust website.

Blue Planet Aquarium
The award-winning Blue Planet Aquarium is one of the UK's largest, and one of the top tourist attractions in the Northwest. With two floors of interactive displays, visitors can see one of Europe's largest collections of sharks (the largest of which is ten feet long) as well as piranhas, octopus, stingrays, poison frogs, seahorses, lobsters, snakes, and a multitude more.

Cost £14 per person.

To find out more go to the Blue Planet website.

5-a-side Football
Always a popular choice, the traditional UK Marine Science 5-a-side football tournament gives you the chance to kick chunks out of your colleagues from around the country. In the past, teams have been organised according to institute/university, and this has led to some especially enthusiastic tackling!

Cost approx. £2 per person (please book via the registration form, but pay on the day).
