As part of the field measurement programme from the jack-up barge, CCMS-POL deployed their Coherent Doppler system to measure
simultaneously orthogonal turbulent flow components and suspended sediment concentration. High frequency data were obtained
up to 80 cm above the bed. The contour plots below show vertical (W), spanwise (V) and streamwise (U) flow components
measured in combined wave-current conditions above a rippled sandy bed at a location in the main tidal inlet channel of
the Barra Nova. In the time-series plots, comparisons are made between U and V components measured by the coherent Doppler
system and an ADV. This is the first ever field application of this new Doppler technology. Analysis of this and other
data sets will provide new insight into the physics of sediment resuspension and transport.
