Current projects
Ocean fluxes (led by Chris Hughes, POL). Focuses on using sea level and bottom pressure
measurements to monitor ocean flows.
West Atlantic Variability Experiment, WAVE (led by Chris Hughes, POL; Ric Williams, University of Liverpool; David Marshall,
University of Reading). This project is part of NERC's RAPID thematic programme on rapid climate change. The project combines
ongoing and historical hydrographic and bottom pressure measurements in the North Atlantic with data from conceptual and
general circulation ocean models aiming at better understanding the dynamics of the meridional overturning circulation.
Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project, AOMIP (led by Andrey Proshutinsky, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution).
Researchers from the USA, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Russia and the UK are collaborating in this project that aims at
improving the representation of Arctic ocean and sea-ice dynamics in existing regional and global general circulation
models.
Research interests
Large-scale ocean, sea-ice and iceberg dynamics.
Stability of ice sheets.
Climatic role of the oceans and maritime and land ice masses.
Ocean, ice and climate modelling. Development of algorithms for the solution of geophysical
partial differential equations.
