UK Sediment Initiative 2009

Developing multidisciplinary sediment dynamics research in a strategic context Liverpool Foresight Centre, 27-29 April 2009.

Dee Estuary

Provisional Programme:

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together UK based researchers, stakeholders and policy makers with an interest in sediment processes, in order to foster collaborative links and to encourage a future multidisciplinary, multi-institution program to be funded via a large Directed Research Proposal and/or Consortium bid. The focus will thus be on breakout discussions and informal talks aimed at developing such research proposals following an initial afternoon of keynote presentations. Keynote speakers have been invited from four different areas as follows:

  • Darius Campbell of DEFRA (subject to confirmation) will talk about policy making and the Marine Bill
  • John Rees of BGS, NERC Natural Hazards Theme Leader will discuss funding opportunities
  • Richard Whitehouse of HR Wallingford will highlight industry needs.
  • Alan Davies of Bangor University will represent the academic research community.
  • A fifth speaker, Chris Sherwood from USGS, involved in the US National Community Sediment Transport Model effort, will also share experience in running such a large collaborative project.

Participants are encouraged to bring along a recent poster to showcase their latest developments. There will be opportunities to discuss posters and the keynote presentations during the tea/coffee breaks. We would like to make the posters available on CD at the time of the conference so please forward pdf files if available to the conference e-mail address given below.

If you would like to attend please email sediments09@pol.ac.uk to register, numbers are limited. Please provide your name, affiliation, a contact email address and a short paragraph on your current and future research interests. Registration will close the 30th January 2009. Due to restrictions on numbers we may have to limit the number of delegates per organisation. Confirmation will take place in early February.
