Measurement systems

Oceans 2025 Theme 8, work package 8.5

The aim is to design, construct and deliver to the science community measurement systems (a) for in-water microstructure, to estimate turbulence and mixing in the water column, and (b) for the detailed dynamics of particles in currents, waves and turbulence.

The set of developments and approximate timings are as follows:

(a) in-water microstructure 2007 2008 2009 2010
Test water-column seismic imaging cruise data acquired Y
  seismic / in-situ comparisons   Y
towed temperature-fluorometer chain Test embryo system Y
Test and use real system   Y
Microstructure on AUV System development, fabrication   Y
  Use on Dee cruises     Y
Microstructure on glider built and Coastal Observatory trial       Y
Stinger for near-surface microstructure fabrication     Y
  trial       Y

(b) dynamics of particles 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011
Coherent Doppler Velocity Profiler complete 3-axis development Y
improved signal/noise and resolution built, trials     Y Y
6-frequency Acoustic Backscatter specification Y
  built, trials   Y
Optical Backscatter built, trials     Y
Intra-ripple suspension imaging         Y
