As a public funded body we have an obilgation to inform the public about our science. We are also very proud of the work we do and are therefore keen to show off and promote our science and research. One of the ways we achieve this is by having stands promoting our work at conferences and exhibitions. We also communicate our science through mediums such as this website which we can use to inform a wide audience of the relevance and importance of our science to our national future. We use a wide variety of mediums to grt our message across (see below) and inform taxpayers of how their money is spent on environmental research:

We contribute to both popular and more scientific television programmes, including BBC TV's 'How Do They Do That?' and 'Local Heroes'. Pictured is Adam Hart-Davies during his visit to POL.
POL's scientists have featured on Radio 4's 'Science Now' and 'Natural History' programmes, Radio 2's 'John Dunn Show', the World Service's 'Science in Action' programme and others. Our scientists' views on topical scientific news events are frequently sought.
Features have appeared in national and local newspapers. Papers and articles appear regularly in scientific journals and more general magazines.
We contribute to exhibitions such as the Mersey River Festival. We are hoping to set up a permanent exhibition at the Mersey Maritime Museum. Listed below are some of our exhibitions from this year:
As part of communicating our science, we take part in events where we meet the public. In June we had a stand at the Mersey River Festival held at the Albert Dock in Liverpool. In August we were at the Blue Planet Aquarium 'Ocean Awareness Weekend' at Ellesmere Port, Wirral. Our eye-catching deep-sea and shallow-water landers attracted many people to the stands. Displays explaining our research on sea-level rise, our Coastal Observatory, and our Ocean Engineering and Technology Group proved popular. Our scientists and technologists enjoy these events, answering many questions and promoting the research of POL and NERC.
This biennial exhibition and conference, held in March, not only enables us to publicise our research but also get up to date on the latest emerging technologies. Most of our Ocean Engineering and Technology Group and some POL scientists attended the event at ExCel in London. All took a turn on the POL stand, but were also able to take part in various workshops, meetings and conferences during the week. One of these was the third in a series of meetings held by the UK Moorings Group. The speakers for this gathering of practical oceanographers to discuss specialist techniques of mooring deployments and recoveries. All the delegates thought the meeting, organised jointly by POL and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, a great success.
