| During the inception and review of the NERC Oceans2025 proposal, the fragmented nature of the UK sediment community was highlighted. Over the next few years this situation is expected to be compounded by the retirement of many of the senior scientists who specialise in shelf and coastal sediments research, further reducing existing links between groups. The main challenge is to cluster and focus the efforts of diverse and relatively isolated sediment groups towards solving the most pressing needs of stakeholders. This workshop is targeted at generating collaborative funding proposals for the UK sediment community. | ![]() Faro Inlet Ripples (INDIA project 1999) |

| When, where, and who's invited? A three day workshop will be held by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory in Liverpool, running 12:30p.m. 27th - 2:00p.m. 29th April 2009. The workshop will be free of charge, with tea/coffee and lunches provided for all 3 days. Evening meals will also be included on the 27th and 28th at local venues. To keep the workshop focused, attendance numbers need to be restricted, and therefore we ask that you limit the number of representatives from your organisation. Participants will be responsible for covering their own travel and accommodation expenses. |

Provisional Programme:The purpose of this workshop is to bring together UK based researchers, stakeholders and policy makers with an interest in sediment processes, in order to foster collaborative links and to encourage a future multidisciplinary, multi-institution program to be funded via a large Directed Research Proposal and/or Consortium bid. The focus will thus be on breakout discussions and informal talks aimed at developing such research proposals following an initial afternoon of keynote presentations. Keynote speakers have been invited from four different areas as follows:
Participants are encouraged to bring along a recent poster to showcase their latest developments. There will be opportunities to discuss posters and the keynote presentations during the tea/coffee breaks. We would like to make the posters available on CD at the time of the conference so please forward pdf files if available to the conference e-mail address given below. If you would like to attend please email sediments09@pol.ac.uk to register, numbers are limited. Please provide your name, affiliation, a contact email address and a short paragraph on your current and future research interests. Registration will close the 30th January 2009. Due to restrictions on numbers we may have to limit the number of delegates per organisation. Confirmation will take place in early February. ![]() Dee Estuary (light aircraft flight 2005) |

Notes The Proudman Oceanographic (POL) scientific research focuses on oceanography encompassing global sea-levels and geodesy, numerical modelling of continental shelf seas and coastal sediment processes. This research alongside activities of surveying, monitoring, data management and forecasting provides strategic support for the wider mission of the Natural Environment Research Council. As a public funded body it is part of our remit to inform the public of the science and research undertaken at the laboratory. Attending events like the 'Ocean Awareness Weekend' at the Blue Planet Aquarium offers the opportunity for our scientists to meet members of the public and present the laboratory's work. The Natural Environment Research Council is one of the UK's eight Research Councils. It uses a budget of about £ 350m a year to fund and carry out impartial scientific research in the sciences of the environment. NERC trains the next generation of independent environmental scientists. It is addressing some of the key questions facing mankind, such as global warming, renewable energy and sustainable economic development. | ||
