NCOF is a strategic partnership between the Met Office and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Southampton Oceanography Centre and the Environmental Systems Science Centre at Reading.
More about NCOF partners

NCOF's mission is to establish ocean forecasting as part of the national infrastructure, based on world-class underpinning research and development.

The POL Contribution

The Proudman Oceanography Laboratory brings to the partnership the UK focus for shelf sea physics and sedimental processes. We also provide national operational functions such as coastal flood forecasting. We seek to gain accelerated exploitation of shelf sea science by the operational user community.

The Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory will contribute to NCOF:

  • Sea level science through the National Tidal and Sea Level Facility
  • Modelling and measurement of the physical processes in ocean margin seas
  • Infrastructure for coupling models of physical processes, biogeochemical processes and ecosystems
  • Marine data management through the British Oceanographic Data Centre
  • Engineering and technological development
  • Education
  • Enterprise and knowledge transfer
  • Advice to government, business and charities
  • Promotion of engagement between science and society
