MANAGEMENT OF THE PROJECT

Communication between participants will be mostly by electronic mail and telephone.

Through the partners' extensive connections, other scientists participating in relevant modelling activities (but not part of the Concerted Action) will be consulted and, when considered appropriate, may be invited to meetings, workshops or to review outputs of the project.

No observational data will be collected during the project. All observational data to be used has been quality controlled and is stored in national data centres. Much of the data has been collected within Mast-2 and Mast-3 projects and has therefore been subject to EC code on data management. Data management in this project will refer solely to model-generated data.

Quality control of model results will come from the sensitivity studies, the comparison of model

results from a specific year to a climate field, and from the real 1:1 validation of the models. The development of a unified methodology for the assessment of model results should be considered as an important step towards quality control of model results.

A CD-ROM will be produced containing:

• Analysis tools, including source code and examples;
• Derived seasonal data distributions;
• Observations used in 1989 direct comparison (subject to permission);
• Model output datasets relating to a) sensitivity study, b) 1989 model runs;
• All analysis results;
• Documentation, including final report.

A workshop involving all partners will be held at critical points in the project. Four workshops are planned:

• The 1st at the start of the project to finalise the details of the work packages;

• The 2nd after 12 months to assess progress on tasks 1-4 and to prepare for the model simulations;

• The 3rd after 24 months to assess the sensitivity study, the observational analysis, the progress on the model simulations and to prepare details of the analysis phase;

• The 4th in the second half of year 3 of the project to review the model analysis and prepare inputs for the final report - the experience of assessing model results in NOMADS makes it essential that there is sufficient time remaining in the project for model reruns after the initial assessment of results.

Additional smaller meetings will be held between the coordinator and partners involved in specific tasks to ensure that milestones will be completed.

• 5.4.6 4th workshop (2 days) to assess model simulations and model-model, model-observation analysis - month 33

• 5.4.7 Model analysis complete; final report and CD-ROM - month 36

• 6-monthly management reports
• 12-monthly scientific and technical reports
• Final report, on cd-rom with examples, analysis tools and documentation.
