POL tidal predictions software

POLPRED

Would knowledge of offshore tides and currents aid your operations? Imagine the benefits if you save just one day's downtime. POLPRED is a cost-effective way to anticipate problems arising from tidal movement. POLPRED is now used by many offshore contractors for both planning and operational activities - [More]

Poltips software

POLTIPS·3 - Tidal prediction software

Within minutes of installing the software you can be producing tide tables for hundreds of locations around the UK (on the standard version), or looking at the ebb and flow of the tide in simple to understand graphics. POLTIPS·3 will run on Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. It has an easy to use and intuitive interface, yet incorporates a sophisticated tidal computation engine - [More]

Search for sunken treasure

The Applications Team have been involved in a wide range of projects and this is one of the more unusual examples.

We don't know whether there will be any treasure on board, but when the flagship of John Paul Jones sank, a ship of major historic significance was lost. In 1779, the Bonhomme Richard engaged HMS Serapis in a three-and-a-half hour point-blank battle. Jones finally won and captured the Serapis, only to watch the Bonhomme Richard be consumed by the sea 36 hours later.

The Ocean Technology Foundation is based in Connecticut, USA, coordinating the search for the Bonhomme Richard, and eventually her raising. They have enlisted the help of experts in many fields to help achieve this. As the precise whereabouts of the ship are unknown, POL provided maps showing the tidal currents off Flamborough Head, in September 1779 - not something readily found at your local chandlers. It is rewarding to see scientists and historians co-operating in the same quest.
